Will Ranbir Kapoor be accepted as a 'Rockstar'?

Although Ranbir Kapoor is from one of the most respected families of the Hindi film industry, still the courage that he has shown for experimentation is noteworthy.

Normally, the actors go for an image building process during the initial days of their careers for the sake of sustaining long but Kapoor exposed himself for criticism in his fifth film only. 'Rocket Singh-Salesman of the Year' was a plot driven film which required Ranbir to part with all the typical round the trees notions about films.

'Rocket Singh' did not win the common audiences' praise but Ranbir was determined to evolve as a thinking actor.

The character of Samar Pratap was modelled on the lines of Michel Corleone of the famous 'Godfather' series. The director Prakash Jha has taken several shots of Ranbir with gloomy background lighting where his expressions were completely different from usual smiling gestures.

The role of Samar Pratap won Ranbir the nomination for Filmfare's best male actor award but he was still not graduated to a level where his persona alone could have carried the whole film.

Ranbir looks absolutely amazing in whatsoever of 'Rockstar' is revealed. The songs are already a rage and the innovative posters coupled with Imtiaz Ali's track record is tempting the viewers but the doubt which crosses the mind is whether the audience will take a rock music based film in a positive manner?

The Hindi film industry has not produced many rock music based films in the past and the genre of rock music is still an upper middle class phenomenon.

It's not that Indian audiences are not familiar with international rock icons and their work but the major chunk of the movie goers can't differentiate among rock, pop, jazz and other styles of singing.

The new breed of filmmakers has started to experiment with music and rock is definitely a vital part of their imagination. Vipul Shah's 'London Dreams' and Abhishek Kapoor's 'Rock On' have tried to establish films made on the lives of rock musicians in recent times. 'London Dreams' crashed at the box office despite a heavyweight star cast but the film opened a new gate for such rock based films. Successful 'Rock On' gave the much needed impetus to the films with rock music in the backdrop.

The 'Rockstar' team has won the promotional round and has ensured a good opening of the film. If media reports are to be believed then Ranbir and Imtiaz have not left a single pebble discovered to make the character and the film believable and appealing.

The reception of 'Rockstar' at the commercial front will decide whether Ranbir had played a right gamble with the film or not.
