Bollywood film on caste stirs controversy in India

A film full of Bollywood stars on the caste system in India churned up heated debate, which opened Friday, with the anger of the lower caste groups are trying to torpedo his release, saying it reinforces social prejudices against them.

AARAKSHAN
The fury makes clear that the caste system _ the old Hindu custom, which divides people into a strict social hierarchy based on traditional livelihoods of their families _ and ethnicity remains an extremely sensitive issue in modern India Despite government programs to eliminate these distinctions.

At least three states have banned the movie "Aarakshan" opening Friday from fears it could inflame tensions of caste. Its director, Prakash Jha, filed an urgent appeal to the Supreme Court to revoke the ban.

Movie stars have been given police bodyguards, and police guarded the emergence of cinema, the audience research and stopping them from bringing bags inside, authorities said.

The film's title means "reserve", in reference to affirmative action quotas for the untouchables of India, also known as Dalits, employment and education.

The Dalits, who constitute nearly a quarter of the population of over one billion in India, such as film, and displays them in a negative light.

Jha disputed their interpretation of his films, but agreed to change parts and may find offensive. A modified version, however, was not available, since it opened in different parts of the country is a lucrative three-day Independence Day weekend.

Movie star, a famous actor Amitabh Bachchan, looked anxious in his Twitter account on Friday, accusing the people condemn the film even see it.

"Being called on our powerlessness is to get people to understand that this art is seen as not forbidden!" Twitter has.

In his blog, Bachchan has said her character in the film, the director of a school, "two Indias in this country live in truth ... and if we see the progress of our society, then the distance between the two Indias should be deleted. "

Caste discrimination is deeply rooted in India, despite government efforts since independence in 1947, for the use of affirmative action to destroy it. India's economic boom has widened the gap further, with many of its dividends received by the upper castes.

However, much of the higher castes in India are furious over the quota policy, which ensures lower caste areas are very popular with medical and engineering schools, universities and jobs.

"AARAKSHAN" created great expectations, with key actors from the films _ that also includes the action hero Saif Ali Khan and Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone _ throughout the country to promote its release.

The film, Bachchan plays the idealistic leader who ends the college to the center of tensions between Dalits and upper caste students in more than a quota system.

Another objection raised by some groups of low-caste Dalit protagtonist is that is played by Khan, belonging to the royal family of ancient India.

"This objection is not fair. According to this logic, say a dalit can not play the role of a king in a movie?" Ask Jha.

With groups of Dalits say that the film is a quota system unilaterally, Uttar Pradesh, the largest Indian state on Wednesday banned the film. Days later, the Government of Punjab and Andhra Pradesh followed.

The ban could cost the film more than 150 million rupees (3.5 million) of income, and spectators are expected to audiences in the theaters long weekend, analysts trade.

A government commission for the welfare of the lower castes has also asked the authorities of the movie in the country to review the authorization given to the film.

"We have written to the Censor Board to review the film and remove at least five offensive dialogue from the film," said PL Punia, who heads the panel. "These changes can occur without affecting narrative of the film."

Another objection raised by some groups of lower castes casting Khan, who belongs to one of the royal families that have ruled parts of India, the protagonist of the Dalits.

"This objection is not fair. According to this logic, say a dalit can not play the role of a king in a movie?" Ask Jha.

Meanwhile, the Mumbai film fraternity to close ranks in support of the film.

"There is nothing objectionable in the film. When people see it, they realize that there is nothing controversial," said Ajay Devgn, one of the biggest stars of Bollywood action.

Shammi Kapoor, the man we romanced !

Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor's leading ladies remember him fondly...

Shammi Kapoor was popular with the ladies, in his own inimitable way. His heroines remember him as someone who brought a joie de vivre to the sets. Someone who taught them that acting wasn't just about control, but about letting go too.

Saira Banu (Junglee & Zameer)

'During Junglee, he was very upset with me'

When I was offered Junglee, I had come down for my holidays from London. At that point, the only heroes I had heard of were Dilip Saab, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand. I hadn't watched a single film of Shammi Saab.

The first thing we shot was the Yahoo song in Srinagar. I had no idea how to lip sync or react to the music. He was so upset with me. He told me that I was wasting time, and that I should learn acting. It made me so angry that I took it as a challenge to do the song right.

It became a cult number. We were offered a lot of films together, which I refused to sign because I was still upset with him. Now I feel I could have done so much more work with him. But we were family friends; Yusuf Saab (Dilip Kumar) and he would speak in Punjabi for hours. I will never forget those moments.

Asha Parekh (Dil Deke Dekho, Teesri Manzil, Pagla Kahin Ka & Jawan Mohabbat)

'We shared a rapport...'

He was a great person. He loved life and lived it to the utmost he was a very happy-go-lucky human being. I started my career with him, so there was a very comfortable rapport between us. In fact, I met him a few months back and there was nothing so serious. I think everyone should learn how to value life and live it to the fullest from Shammiji.

Vyjayantimala (Prince)

'He would try to outdo himself each time'

The last time I met Shammiji was in Atlanta at an awards function many years ago. I remember his smiling face even when he was on the wheelchair.

As an actor, I would say he was very self-involved, trying to master every move. That's what created such a trademark style for him. He would try and outdo himself each time.

There was a sequence in Prince where Helen, Shammiji and I had a musical number to perform. It was like three different styles of dance coming together. But even then, he stood out.

Hema Malini (Andaz)

'Spirituality transformed him'

I was very scared to work with him because I had heard he was a very boisterous personality.

Plus I was very new to the industry, so I was anyway intimidated by many other actors. However, when I met him, I realised how nice and gentle a person he was.

In fact, Andaz was one film where he wasn't jumping around; it was a much more controlled performance. I still remember the song 'Dil use do, jo jaan de de' where he had to make me dance. I was surprised by how flexible and charming he was when he took to the dance floor.

He used to choreograph himself most of the times, and the cameramen would have a tough time trying to capture his moves.

It was when he became spiritual that I got very close to his family. His wife and he used to go to a babaji in Nainital and would always invite me.

Sharmila Tagore (Kashmir Ki Kali & An Evening In Paris)

'He was not at all like his family'

He was not like the rest of the Kapoors. He was completely out-of-the-box, and that's what everyone loved about him. When I first heard that I was doing my first Hindi film with Shammi Kapoor, I couldn't really believe my ears.

But it is when I started working with him that I realised what a fine actor he was.

On screen his mannerisms and eccentricities would overshadow a lot of other elements, but he was an extremely sensitive performer you can see that in the song Ishaaron ishaaron mein in Kashmir Ki Kali.

That quality of acting comes from theatre, which is where he first began his training.

Sadhana (Rajkumar & Badtameez)

'He used to lend me books all the time'

I have to confess that initially I was a little apprehensive about working with Shammi Kapoor because I did not know if I would be compatible with him as a co-star. But it was an absolute delight to work with him.

He was not just a co-star, but also a friend and a guide. The one thing that stood out was his sense of humour. He would make everyone laugh, easing the tension.

Not many know this, but he was a voracious reader and he had an excellent library at home. He used to suggest authors and books to me, and sometimes even force me to read stuff. There was and will be no one like him.

Mumtaz (Bramhachari)

'He loved entertaining people'

I did just one film with Shammiji, but we were good family friends. He was a very generous person.

But he was also a little short-tempered with people who managed to rub him the wrong way. He had many friends and he loved entertaining people. I think he did not get his due until Pagla Kahin Ka and Bramhachari.

I was just 18 when I gave my first shot with him, and even then I could very well gauge what an excellent performer he was. You can never ever compare him with anyone because there will never be another Shammi Kapoor.

Nanda (Premrog)

'He treated co-stars with dignity'

In my hay days, I never had a chance to work with Shammi Kapoor. But I remember he had always expressed a desire to act with me someday.

Finally, in 1982, Raj Kapoor cast us together in Premrog. Shammi was a very affectionate person. He knew how to treat every heroine and co-actor with dignity, something which today's generation totally lacks.

AARARSHAN - Movie Review

Director :
 Prakash Jha
Music :
Shankar Mahadevan,
Ehsaan Noorani,
Loy Mendonca
Lyrics :
Prasoon Joshi
Starring :
Amitabh Bachchan,
Saif Ali Khan,
Manoj Bajpayee,
Deepika Padukone,
Prateik Babbar,
Shabana Azmi,
Tanvi Azmi
Hema Malini

In the first scene of AARAKSHAN, Deepak Kumar (Saif Ali Khan), while a college interview, made fun of because of his caste. He storms into the room, not before offending the interviewee and the film starts on a high note. But as the clock ticks, the graph of the film only to head south.

Prabhakar AARAKSHAN about Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), who was one of the pillars of private high school in Bhopal for over 30 years. Idealistic, believes in the merits of capital, yet is respectful of poor students who can not score a high score. Deepak is an incredible help Prabharkar, is in love with his daughter, Poorbi (Deepika Padukone). Sushant (Prateik) Poorbi is a good friend and studies in the college itself.

A comment in a newspaper in the Supreme Court order on reservation land in a difficult situation Prabhakar. He resigned to make way for interesting Mithilesh Singh (Manoj Bajpai), part of the institution, but focuses more on his private training course. Because of his evil plans, Prabhakar and his family are even forced to flee their homes. Prabhakar Can he regain his life, is what follows.

AARAKSHAN
Based on the social issue of the reserve Prakash Jha AARARSHAN has his heart in the right place. But it takes a long time to send the message that he lacks patience. The first half, despite taking a long time (two back-to-back songs) to get to the main plot is pretty good. Conflicts between the characters to do a show appeal. But after the break, Prakash loses its grip as the story just drags. It is laborious and repetitive search, the story moves at a snail's pace. The highlight is too good to be true and can not have a big impact. AARAKSHAN remember the last movie Prakash, Raajneeti, but does not match the subtlety and the drama of it. However, it has the potential to initiate a new debate on the issue of reservation, offering an alternative.

Music Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy is disappointing, since none of the songs is on the mark. Sachin Kumar Krishnan cinematography is fine. Santosh Mandal issue could have been a lot sharper.

Amitabh Bachchan offers exceptional performance and fits the role of T. Note the scene after he resigned and left the university. His eyes just said everything. This shows that hunger is still there. Saif Ali Khan, works well and makes her character believable. Deepika Padukone is decent. Manoj Bajpai plays the character perfectly negative selection. Prateik does wrong and has to improve a lot. Darshan Jariwala is good. Yashpal Sharma is efficient. Hema Malini Cameo makes little sense.

You do not lose much, if not "reserve" a place AARAKSHAN.

Rating: 2.5 / 5
